The Paperwork Checklist: Every Document You Need to Buy a Car

Most used-car problems are visible on paper long before they're visible on the driveway. This is the full document checklist: what the seller should hand you, what you need to bring yourself, and exactly what to check on each.

What the seller must give you

The V5C (logbook) — the one that matters most

The V5C proves who the registered keeper is. Check all of this:

• The make, model and registration number match the car in front of you.
• The VIN on the V5C matches the VIN on the car. The VIN is usually visible through the base of the windscreen, in the driver's door jamb, or under the bonnet. A mismatch is a walk-away, no exceptions.
• It's an original, not a photocopy. A genuine V5C carries a "DVL" watermark when you hold it to the light.
• The seller's name and address match the document. If you're buying privately, you should be at the address on the V5C.
• The serial number isn't in a known stolen batch. DVLA has flagged blank logbooks in the ranges BG8229501–BG9999030 and BI2305501–BI2800000. A V5C in those ranges is a serious red flag.

One thing the V5C does not prove: ownership. It only names the registered keeper. It also tells you nothing about outstanding finance, write-off status or clocking — that's what a provenance check is for. See how to check a used car's history.

MOT certificate and history

Get the current certificate, and read the advisories — they're a free preview of what's about to cost you money. You can verify the whole MOT history for free at gov.uk using just the registration, which is also the easiest way to sanity-check the recorded mileage year on year.

Service history

A stamped service book, or dated digital records, showing garage names and mileage at each service. Gaps aren't automatically fatal on an older car, but they should be reflected in the price.

A receipt

Insist on one, even from a private seller. It should include both parties' names and addresses, the date, the car's registration, make and model, the exact mileage at handover, the price paid, and any work the seller has agreed to do. If a dealer promised a new MOT or a service as part of the deal, it goes on the receipt.

What you need to bring

• Your driving licence — proves you can legally drive and confirms your identity to the seller.
• Insurance in place before you drive away. Cover must be active the moment the car moves. Either start an annual policy on collection day or use temporary driveaway insurance.
• Vehicle tax. Road tax is not transferable from the previous keeper. You tax it yourself using the 12-digit reference on the V5C/2 green slip the seller gives you — online at gov.uk, by phone, or at a Post Office. Do this before you drive off.
• Finance paperwork, if you're not paying outright.

Paying safely

For anything above a few hundred pounds, use a traceable method — a bank transfer (tell your bank first, or the payment may be held), a banker's draft, or a credit card where the fee is worth the protection. Paying any part by credit card can bring Section 75 protection under the Consumer Credit Act. Never hand over money before you're completely satisfied with the car and the documents.
